Some of us definitely feel the jitters associated with upcoming Black Friday. Some likewise feel fidgety and excited in anticipation of the shopping spree that they would engage in on Black Friday. Hence, many of us who haven’t felt the rub of Black Friday pitch are asking why Black Friday has these great effects on shoppers. What is it with Black Friday that makes it a highly longed after day of the year? Is it the name which carries the fearsome connotation of the word “black” that makes this day special? Is it the stellar deals and awesome discounts that make people want to speed up the calendar to hasten the approach of Black Friday? I am a self-made psychologist and definitely I would like to give some reasons on why this day has that special appeal to many people.
Reasons Why Many Long for Black Friday
Black Friday is almost a month detached from Christmas Day, yet the frenzied movements of shoppers who are all looking for the best deals are somewhat akin to the behavior of a crowd. Hence, there might be some universal reasons behind these seemingly highly agitated and feverishly excited behaviors of people.
One reason I can think of to justify this frenzied behavior is financial. Not all of us are millionaires, and hence, many of us make sure that we get the best deals for our hard-earned money. We want some items which, if we buy on a regular day, would put a dent on our monthly budget. To minimize the dent on our budget, we are always on a lookout for discounts and savings, and it is on Black Friday that these needs for items, discounts, and savings are realized.
We can also attribute this feverish behavior of many people to tradition. There seem to be a need for savings and discounts generated by the Black Friday tradition which has been institutionalized in the subconscious of many shoppers. Hence, Black Friday fever becomes more intense as the Black Friday approaches. Since the day has been institutionalized subconsciously, it has become natural for most people to long and prepare for Black Friday bonanza. For this reason, retail stores, such as Target, Wall-Mart, and many more, are there to furnish this tradition its backbone. Likewise, there are Target Black Friday bonanza and many more to strengthen this tradition.
There is also the thrill and excitement associated with Black Friday. The title “Black Friday” itself sends shivers to the bone because of the concomitant challenges and fear associated with the color “black.” It means that you got to engage in a real battle to get a hand on your desired items. You got to jostle and elbow your way to get to those items, even braving the cold November night just to be the first person to enter the stores. There seem to be an element of triumph whenever one gets ahead of other shoppers on Black Friday. I guess the baser instinctual drives are at work during Black Friday’s bargain hunting. Hence, some people would readily brand this shopping frenzy as irrational.
I hope that with the abovementioned reasons, you will understand better why you are lining up at the wee hours of the night in front of the stores on the cold and chilly Black Friday.
