My friend was talking about getting a shotgun to attach to his rifle (sounds cool) and I'm questioning if it's possible to do, if so how? Would this mod be worth it?

yes its possible. it could be done with ris or ras. the shotgun would have to have rail attachement like a m203 made for ris. and if or not it would be worth it...it is really up to the player.

They're not neccessarily useless. Friday at Martyn's I got to see Dre's custom 'Masterkey' he and Vic had just finished. Granted the shotgun he used was one of the cheap springer-types, but think about it. Your gun stops shooting (battery/jam/etc.), you're SoL until you get off the field. Not Dre, he's got a back up on the gun. The last model of ICS M4-type aegs had bad trigger switches that could burn out from extended firing. So if it did burn out on the field (and it has happened to Dre a couple times), the shotgun would come in handy.

Excess weight on the front of your gun, IMHO.
The rate of fire, as well as the awkwardness to operate in a fight, makes it more of a looks thing than a function thing. Relaoding them is awkward, and shooting them accurately will also be a challenge.
Plus, all that swiss army looking stuff dangling from your barrel is doom waiting to happen. Most AEGs are not designed for the additional weight, and it will affect the accuracy of your gun.
If my AEG goes down, I either transition to a sidearm and figure something out, or call it and walk off the field.

Eh, he wanted a Masterkey, he got a Masterkey. At least for him it's a cheap springer, so it didn't add too much weight.
