i was a dicks today and there was a ump with a detachable silencer, what does the silencer do?

On some guns you can use them so you can use a longer inner barrell. Some of them will actually make the noise of the gearbox in work a little quieter.

Some people buy them for a good look on their gun, and also what Sureshot said.

What dicks sporting goods where you at that that has a UMP, i love the gun, and would like to get one from there.

the silencer doenst help with noise from the gear box just to clear that up. the only thing it does is mainly for looks, also longer barrel and barley muffles the sound of air coming out of the barrel

I actually have seen a difference. The noise of the piston can be somewhat suppressed by using a silencer. Nothing needed though because airsoft guns arent really loud to begin with.

I think that's what birdman was trying to say. There is a "bang" noise that people hear in the distance and that is what gets muffled if you buy a good silencer. The gearbox will sound the same, but since the "bang" is really created by the gearbox, Sureshot is right too.

Long story short, silencers filled with foam work to muffle the sound of your shots, but that's the least of your worries if you are buying a gun from Dicks. Those guns are just for backyard target practice and won't hold up to the ones used at airsoft events.

Supress change the sound, but in my opinion, they don't actually make it quiet. So little of the noise from an AEG is from the actual barrel. Most of the noise is from the motor spinning.

Supressors can cover up a longer barrel, and that's the most useful way to employ them. Even with a quieter AEG, it's still going to give your position away. Range and FPS is more valuable.
