I am not saying that all oversight/meddling is right or correct. However, it needs to be curtailed, otherwise it would be anarchy or like a gladiator pit.

However, once you do a serious crime and get time, you should loose all rights; no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

That means no cable tv, no right to weights, etc. Those that have a low risk of being reincarcerated, have a little more rights; education, job training etc.

And if it makes you feel better, there are also stupid conservative groups out there too.

Just to start, the way you phrased your sentence when you said "stupid liberals" doesn't make you sound like you're talking about a group of stupid liberals (which even liberals like myself know exist), but it sounded like you were calling all liberals stupid. Whether you meant to or not I could care less, but I thought I'd begin by pointing that out.

baupdeth wrote:

Alright, you're entitled to that opinion. But then you say...
baupdeth wrote:

How is that fair? Who draws the line here? Is it possible at all to make such a HUGE division in America's prison system? Think about the types of people who would make this decision...

[rant]
The bottom line is that prison needs to stop being treated like a giant fenced in area to throw all law offenders into. Prison, as warped as this sounds these days, is meant to punish someone so that they will become better, self sufficient citizens when they are released. Cutting all education, personal rights, and funding that these people need to survive when they're released is NOT a good way to stop crime. This has been proven time and time again... Pissing someone off isn't good enough. Prisons are supposed to be about REFORM, but are too full to do anything close to that.

So call me a screaming liberal when I say that ALL HUMANS are created equal. The pervert molesting some kid, although fucked in the head, deserves the same rights that the kid does. Both should be treated fairly and justly. To do differently is an infringement of democracy, the constitution, justice, and (applicable to most people in charge of the country) a SIN in the eyes of who they so "diligently" worship, God.
[/rant]

I suppose that's my WTF. Prisons, and their intentions.

Our prison system and our justice system are in dire need of a total overhaul. It has failed, miserably. We have so many people going into prisons, and so many people being release and re offending. Our justice system provides neither swift, nor harsh, nor just punishment. It is a disgrace.

I agree with Baupdeth, once you f**k up big time, its done. I believe people who commit crimes and serve time in prison can change and become part of society, but I do not believe that there is any chance at rehabilitation for murders, rapists or child molesters. They have ruined other peoples lives beyond any hope of repair. They are vile scumbags. They were a danger to society when they were out on the streets why they first committed the crime, and they would be a danger when they are released. And remember, once agian, they have ruined someones life.

I feel he should have been dragged behind the court house and shot. (Feel free to call me a cruel, sadistic asshole.) But because I doubt that will ever become a reality, I think they should spend the rest of their life in solitary confinement. No T.V., no schooling, for fucks sake no sex changes, no weights, severly restricted yard time, ect, ect.

Less serious offenders can be rehablitated. They haven't fucked up beyond repair, they can still be members of society.

Man, I fee like im typing a fucking paper for school.

Regardless, NO FUCKING SEX CHANGES FOR CONVICTS IN PRISON ON TAXPAYER DOLLARS!

I think we're all on the same page, pretty much. It's important to remember that sex offenders aren't what's filling our prison system up. The rise is due to the "war on drugs" which is literally throwing tax money down the drain.

When is the government going to realize that they can NOT tell us what we can and can't do with our own bodies? If we own any ONE THING in this world, it's our bodies, right? And if I want to inject mine with all kinds of drugs, why shouldn't the FDA be watching my back and making sure the skag I'm injecting in my arm doesn't have some nasty chemicals in it?

No, I don't do heroin... But if I wanted to, it's my right to.

So what these drug offenders are doing, in my opinion, is taking away the "reform" that is available for these sex offenders and murders to hopefully make them better people, even if they're in jail for life (which is fine by me!).

Drugs cause less fatalities than alcohol, and talk to any drug user - getting the stuff isn't much harder than going out and buying beer. The prison system would be less choked with people if we just legalized SOME drugs, but the guys in charge don't like the idea of this at all. They were raised by hippy-haters and think ALL drugs are EVIL. Bah.

Yeah, you called it Freeze. NO SEX CHANGES FOR INMATES. Unless they want to foot the bill, of course.

Admittedly, the entire War on Drugs is phucked, so is the entire cj and prison system. However, I am not for legalization of anything, nor dumping money into a failing system for offender programs.

It's been proven repeatedly that drug crime is a gateway for other serious felonies; armed robbery, burglary, home invasion, and homicide. Also, who ends up paying when someone od's, and they don't have insurance.

Maybe my p.o.v. is warped after being born in the early 70s; 1972 to be exact, and having grown up during the crack rise, and assorted violence that was the 80's.

Sorry about the derail here, but WTF!!!

Aren't we a lovely loving species?

www.iht.com/articles/a...rrests.php

quote:
A rural Tennessee father is accused of raping his two teenage daughters and using electric dog collars to establish dominance over them, authorities said Tuesday.

The charges against the 37-year-old man and his 35-year-old wife were referred to a grand jury on Tuesday in Tazewell, which is in rural Claiborne County near the Kentucky border.

The man is charged with aggravated child abuse and two counts of surprise sex. His wife, who prosecutors say knew about the use of dog collars but not the alleged sexual assaults, is charged with aggravated child abuse and failure to report child abuse.

...

The man used remote-controlled shock collars to force his two eldest daughters — now ages 18 and 19 — to obey him, said Capt. Sam Nelson, the lead investigator at the Claiborne County Sheriff's Office.

The two girls are from their father's previous marriage. The couple has three other children, a girl and two boys, but none of the abuse allegations relate to those children, prosecutors said.

The 18-year-old girl said her father raped her and her sister for a period of about five years, from when they were in their early teens, said prosecutor Amanda Sammons. The girl said he raped her in the family's mobile home and in the woods, Nelson said.

The girl said her father put a shotgun to her head "and said that if she ever told anyone, he would kill himself, her and anyone who tried to remove her from the home," according to an affidavit filed by Nelson.

She had been too scared before to tell authorities, but was now "scared for her younger sister, who was 11. She was afraid that her father was going to do the same thing to her," Nelson said.

Death penalty for this bastard. PLEASE.

Unfortunately, I dont' believe the death penalty can/is given to non-homicide crimes.

Personally, I'm an "eye for an eye" kinda guy. This man should be brutally raped by the roughest inmate they can find.

To the "prison rights" issue. Education and job training are ideally what keep people from committing further crimes. It doesn't always work, no, but if you lock people up for 30 years, let them go, and just pray that they wont' resort to crime when they have no money, education, or job training, then you shouldn't have ever let them out, because they WILL commit more crimes.

Prisoners should NOT have luxuries. jail shouldn't look like a good alternative for people.

I'm all for shipping criminals to an isolated island for death matches. Wasn't that a movie?

Sorry for the derail but WTF.

MSNBC posted:
Prosecutors are calling it a horrific case of child abuse. Today they charged the parents of a 5-month-old Peoria boy with first-degree murder. 21-year-old Tracey Hermann and 23-year-old James Sargent are accused of gross neglect and starvation of their baby. Last week Sargent called 9-1-1 from the family's Proctor Street home in Peoria. When rescue personnel arrived they found the baby unresponsive seated in a car seat placed inside a crib.

Investigators now believe the child had been strapped in the car seat without food or water for eight days. States Attorney Kevin Lyons said the room was about 80 degrees when the baby was fgound. The boy was wearing a snowsuit and held in the car seat by a rope. He said there are times "when crying yourself to sleep no longer works, and you cry yourself to death."

Tracey Hermann has another child, a three year old girl. The state is moving to have that child permanently removed from Hermann. Because of the age of the Benjamin Sargent, both James Sargent and Tracey Hermann, are eligible for the death penalty if convicted. Lyons has 120 days from the time Sargent and Hermann are indicted to make that decision. You can see an extended interview with Kevin Lyons tonight on News 25 at 9:00 p.m. on My 59.

Here is a copy of Peoria County States Attorney Kevin Lyon's statement to the court:

On February 12, 2008, Peoria Police responded to a call at 3012 W. Proctor Street in Peoria. Found dead and strapped in a car seat that had been placed in a crib was 5-month-old Benjamin Sargent. The defendants are his parents. Benjamin was wearing a blue snow suit. It was zipped up. The temperature in the room was near 80 degrees.Benjamin's eyes were open, his hands were clenched in a fistlike position and, although dead, his eyes were staring straight ahead. Police investigation and medical and pahtological examination would reveal that Benjamin had been strapped into this car seat and had not left it in eight days. All waste and urine had collected beneath him and his buttocks, legs and back were eaten into by the resulting poison. Some aste left in benjamin's colon revealed resulted in constipation because it could not be pushed out of his body due to starvation.

James Sargent was present at the house and, when interviewed on that day, and again on February 18, his answers to questions confirmed for police that Benjamin had been returned to the residence on february 4, 2008, by a grandmother and he was in the same car seat, wearing the same snow suit, and confined in the same manner as when he was found dead eight days later. A person who 'stayed' with others in the garage of the defendants told police that he was the one who observed Benjamin in the car seat, and on the living room floor, and that it was he who found this odd and so, he placed the child (while in the car seat) in a baby crib in a bedroom. The house was kept in an outrageous condition with nothing in its place, food left out and spoiled, and belongings scattered everywhere. Clothing, articles, spoilage, and debris were stacked everywhere around the house. James Sargent told police he "thought" he had maybe moved Benjamin once or twice during the eight-day period but, upon further questioning, he conceded that he may not have been moved at all. The person from the garage tells police that Benjamin was found just as he had left him eight days earlier.

The 'mother' was in Iowa, where she had gone to see a male boyfriend she found over the internet. She told police that caring for her baby Benjamin was not her duty and that it was James' responsibility. Before heading to Iowa on the day before Benjamin was found dead, Tracy Hermann said she looked at the baby in the crib and presumed he was sleeping so she said she stuck a bottle between the baby and the side of the carseat so that he woke up he could grab it and feed himself if he was hungry. In case the court missed it earlier, Benjamin Sargent was five months old. Tracy Hermann also has a daughter, almost 3, who Tracy Hermann seems to have 'given away' to a family member. A shelter care hearing on that matter now pends in the circuit court because I am also seeking to remove her permanently and forever from any contact with Tracy Hermann. Preliminary examination of Benjamin Sargent's body showed that he weighed 10 pounds, suffered from sepsis in the blood and tissue, was without proper liquid and food and that he died from starvation due to neglect.

today.msnbc.msn.com/id/23262198

Maybe these two idiots should die the way that their child did. Either that or when they are doing time, somebody shanks them in the eye with a dull, rusty spork.

I'm going home and hugging my kids hard today.

If there was anyone who deserved the death penalty. Jesus Christ.
