Alright, the very first AEG purchase... an important decision must be made here, and that's why it's most likely I'd screw it up and wind up with a gun I can't wait to replace.

When I purchase my first AEG, I want to take priority in considering what type of combat role I'd most likely play. I have been intent on a Light Machine Gunner role, or another form of heavy-weapons support, but the gear for that can add up quick (Lowest price on an M249 was the STAR M249 MKII at $500, not counting battery, shipping, sling, etc...)

So after reading around I found a lower priced alternative (kinda) the TM FA-MAS F1/SV. I'd read the review on arniesairsoft of the F1 and it sounded like it could perform this role good for an entry level gun, especially with 300rd high capacity mags and its motors high rate of fire. But it's one of the first TM rifles that were manufactured and it has an older motor and gearbox style (I think it was the EG560 or something similar). Anyway, it's stated as having a really high rate of fire, but I assume that's at the sacrifice of range, but for a LMG role that shouldn't be of concern, should it? Fact remains that the FA-MAS is supposed to be a battle rifle, that may function as LMG in the airsoft realm, because of the ability to store more ammo in a compact format. So, even though I love the bullpup layout, and I like the way the FA-MAS looks, would it possibly warrant a good first purchase?

Aside from that, I'd gladly play any other role, I just like to think I can stick to a useful and reliable role on the field, rather than just a "jack of all trades" type of combatant. I guess I'm just using a long, drawn out way to say; "I want to find something I'm good at." lol.

The other guns that drew my attention were the STAR L852A2 (expensive, but I llke it), TM Steyr AUG Special (did TM stop manufacturing the military version? I can't find it anywhere and when I do it's always out of stock), an SG-1 (I don't know whether I'd want the TM or the Classic Army [CA33E], the classic army is full metal construction, which I like more), ICS M16A3, or the G&G RK104 (AK-47). Aw what the hell, that King Arms Druganov looks pretty damn cool to me too.

Theres so many different possibilities, and whatever I do purchase, I would absolutely want to perform custom upgrades in the future when I learn to do so. Another important thing to me when it comes to my choice, is how prominent the gun is, by this I mean; I want to get something that I won't see 8 to 10 other guys also carrying around. This was another reason I nearly settled on the FA-MAS, because I hear a lot of people complain about how they either dislike the gun for it's design, or they just think it's a French peice of s**t, so that means that I'd be one of the few with one, and I'd prefer to use a less popular gun. But, I've only gathered information from forums, reviews, and rants online, so I really don't have much of an accurate basis on what's popular and what's not. I'd just like to stand out a bit, with a gun that's reliable, that's all. And that's why this decision is so damn hard! lol

I'm not asking the dumb question:

"Err... what I buy now???"

Just a little advice to push my investment in the right direction.

The TM Famas is generally a French POS. It has the highest rate of fire for any stock TM gun, but thats about it. Its got a crappy plastic body and it is almost impossible to upgrade the gun internally.

If you want a gun that can perform as a LMG type gun, check out the TM AK series, its got a high rate of fire and can be upgraded to an RPK if your willing to dump enough money into it, now thats definitly unique. Classic Army and G&G just came out with AK series guns, and those defintly might be worth checking out.

Jimmy and Brian both have Augs, and they might want to talk about those.

Well, that tells me what I wanted to know.

The fact that the TM FAMAS is mostly plasic construction is enough to deter me from it, besides, I was having a difficult time finding any customization options for it anyway.

Then it narrows it down, I still want to look into quite a few different guns. But for my first purchase, I'd be content with an AK, I'll begin looking around for brands/prices/and options, while keeping focus on rigid construction. Thanks for the tip then.

(That RPK possibility is intriguing, I played MEC support throuought most of my time w/ BF2, and that was the roles primary weapon.)

And I'm still open to hear a users opinion on the AUG.

NOOOOOOOOO! i tried to post my big long thing and some error occurred an I lost it. Oh well, I'll just give you the short version of it.

1) only difference between gears of FAMAS and other guns is that the FAMAs has high speed geras aleady.

2) Basically all parts are interchangable.

3)barrel length is the same a the m16's, but FAMAS itself is shorter.

4)It is possible to fit other motors in the FAMAS, it just takes a little work.

5)once you get your FAMAS, if you want help on upgrading it, talk to Zephyranthes 02 on AIM
6)the body is one of the most durable plastic bodies there are.

awesome FAMAS pics

Here's one for Freezer Razz

A swiss army FAMAS!

FAMAS isn't upgradeable now is it?

I have a TM FAMAS, battery, charger, speedloader, standard mag, HiCap mag, barrel sock, and box, all for $255. The FAMAS is professionally upgraded to 350fps.

Wow. I would have never expected to see that. Some ridicuouls ones tho (Swiss Army, Ha!)

Great, now you've made the decision tougher. lol.

Hearing about the plastic body was my main concern, If I go with it, I really hope it's as durable as you say it is. I like the AK, I just aesthetically prefer the FAMAS.

I'll figure this out eventually!!

I may as well ask while I'm here too:

Some of you guys have been to Aggressive Sports before, I wanted to check the place out myself, but it's a lengthy drive for me, and I would only travel if I knew I would make a purchase. I was wondering if it would be worth it... I know it's probably weird I'd go that far just for this, but I'd much prefer going to a retail storefront than just shop on the net.

Miner, how long you been airsofting? What guns have you had experance with?
I have been airsofting for a long time, and have had alot of experance with differant guns, ranging from TM Mp5s to CA M15 and alot of guns inbetween. And I have to say, the one of the most solid guns I have handled, is a TM AK.

The fact is that, the FAMAS, when compared to other TM guns, and any other airsoft gun out there, like CA or G&G, is a piece of crap. Its the oldest TM AEG out there, and INTERNAL upgrades for it are rare do to the fact that few were made.

All Zephyranthes did is add a bunch of useless crap to his gun, and IMO his FAMAS is far from awesome.

However, if your not planning on upgrading your gun and leaving it stock, the FAMAS will do as well performance wise as anyother stock AEG out there.

What is more badass than an AK?

Except maybe an RPK?

CA36C takes the cake, sorry boys. haha, oh and as for ASJ, I may be biased but I would say go for it, if stock is full up it is totally worth the drive.

The FAMAS body isn't much better than any other gun, it is more prone to squeeking though. Most any gun you buy from TM will be majority plastic stock though. I'd go CA if you aren't a fan of plastic. But also another factor, is the fact that the FAMAS is bullpup. I love the AUG, don't get me wrong, but bullpup is a little more uncomfortable to use. I guess it makes up for it with the longer barrel and all that jive though.

Well, I've made up my mind... this is what I'll be purchasing when I can afford it (hopefully within another month).

A G&G RK104
