Does anyone know roughly how far 300 fps w/ .2 gram BB's and minimal hop-up will propel a BB? All help appreciated. Thanx.

I have never measured myself, but depending on the barrel and battery a .2gram bb can shoot about 100 feet (maybe 80 accurately). I mean if you hold your gun at a 45 degree angle and shoot, the bbs will travel pretty damn far, but yea when you actually shoot at something they should only travel about 80 feet accurately.

Are you serious? If that's true, then I don't see any purpose in me upgrading my gun, because it already shoots that far. That really doesn't make sense though, because my gun is only 200 fps and it shoots that far... Well thanx for the reply, anyway.
Edit: How high of FPS would you guess you would need to get a maximum distance of 150 feet?

To shoot accurately at that range you need more than a high muzzle velocity, you also need a looooong innerbarrel to guide the BB in the right direction. Most AEGs don't have long enough innerbarrels which is why certain upgraded rifles like Jay of NIAA's M24 can outrange many of our guns.

Ok, thanks for the info.
Edit: So about how much fps would it take to get to 150 feet, if you didn't care at all about acuracy?

That's why I got a long 590mm PSG-1 type inner barrel for my M-14. I might not be able to get the same range that Jay does, but it's close enough.

I run a FAMAS w/ a 477mm Tightbore Barell / M-130 / EG700 / 10.8v / Helical Gears + many more custom parts.
I can hit accurately positions up to 200ft+ away without arcing the weapon.
I have to run .25's because .20's just squirl out the barell.
80-100ft, yeah for a stock weapon.
One section of our layout is 300ft across and I easilly shoot over 2/3 of the way across it.
I get kills too from that distance!

An M-130 would exceed the 400 fps limit for most games, though...

|
I want to upgrade my gun so that it shoots far and hard, but I also do not want to upgrade it too far. I am looking for a suitable FPS that will allow me to have a great gun, but also not have it be too painful on my friends. Do you guys think that with 380 fps I will still be able to play in my backyard with my friends safely? What would be the highest FPS that you guys would consider not too painful for close range (maybe 30-60 feet) battles? I am especially worried mostly because the people I usually airsoft with do not wear any sort of protective gear other than goggles.
Right now I am debating between 285, 330, 365, or 380 fps.
The FPS needs to be high enough for it to be professionally competitive, yet backyard friendly.
Any help would be appreciated.

380 fps ... none of your friends will want to play with you. That is powerful enough to open a hole in a pop can so -- from the way and the place I have seen you play -- it will be too powerful. Those of us with that kind of power are typically playing on LARGE fields.
I highly recommend trying to start a personal fund for airsoft games so you can come out to them more. Playing around houses is illegal, not nearly as fun as hosted games, dangerous, and above all ... not airsoft. Remember it's all about military simulation (milsim) and is less about shooting people and more about tactics.

Ok, thanx for the information. When have you ever seen me play, though?

Oh, that was you? I thought that was Kevin Wood... Well, then again, I didn't really get a good look at whoever it was. Yes, that was me, although I don't usually airsoft in such publicly viewable places. Normally I would be in my yard or off in the little strip of forestry that runs along that pond.

Make sure you stay out of view of the people who live next to brian on the left if you're facing his house. They got angry at us for playing around there. They're really the reason we stopped playing in that neighborhood.

The thing is, professionally competitive and backyard friendly are almost mututally exclusive when it comes to power. To me, anything over 300 is excessive for backyard wars, but 300-350 fps is about the standard for AEGs in field games. If you have a low power gun, just keep it that way for backyard airsoft, and then get a second gun and upgrade it to play at games at.

Can we stop all of these backyard battle topics please? Its irresponsible and its illegal. Bottom line. The younger they get, the less respect they have for the sport and the responsibility of keeping it safe and legalized.

I would do that, but I'm on a tight budget right now. Thanx for the help, though.
